Skills ‘Taster’ Session at the IHBC Annual School 2013 in Carlisle
The IHBC has endorsed National Heritage Training Group (NHTG) programmes for their potential value as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for IHBC members seeking to better understand how traditional skills underpin conservation advocacy and practice.
IHBC Director Sean O’Reilly said: ‘It’s great that the IHBC is in a position to endorse the value of training supported by the NHTG as potential CPD for our members, with the NHTG site now listed on our website listing of recognised CPD providers.’
‘CPD is critical in our sector as we encompass such a wide range of skills and knowledge, from strategic policy, economics and technological innovation to, of course, traditional skills. The work of the NHTG, and the investment they can direct to training in these areas is critical in developing learning opportunities for all our members.’
‘This is especially important in these challenging times when national bodies are investing so little in the early careers of our future built and historic environment conservation specialists’.
‘In 2013, as part of our Annual School in Carlisle, the IHBC and the NHTG joined forces to offer a day of traditional skills ‘tasters’, managed by the Heritage Skills Initiative in the North of England Civic Trust. It was a great opportunity for all delegates, inside and outside the IHBC, to get a sense of what it is like to work with traditional material. The new courses generated through the good work of the NHTG offer more access to skills development for anyone with a keen interest in developing their skills in these areas.’
John Munro of the The Traditional Building Skills Company, responsible for delivering some of this key training on behalf of the NHTG, said: ‘Being involved in the delivery of NHTG training courses over the last couple of years has highlighted to me what a fantastic organisation the NHTG is, and how they are at the forefront of improving skills and capabilities within the workforce of the heritage sector.’
